Periostitis is an inflammation linked to the tissues of tendons and muscles located at the inside of the calf bone in your lower leg. Athletes and persons with a high grade of activity on the foot are often exposed to this disorder. Footwear and ground conditions play an important role in most causes.
The symptoms appear as pain on the inner side of the lower leg, to get worse with more loading. If the dysfunction increases, the pain will appear even at little or none activity at all. Worst case, all activity or training have to cease for a period of time, sometimes even longer.
The cause lies in the intensity of training. The pain becomes worse when activity increases. The inflammation is a result of the muscles growing tighter and larger from training intensely, but also from stiffness and increased pressure on the tissues of tendon, attached to the lower leg.
There is also a context between the amount of causes and how the athlete falls in on the foot when it touches the ground or pushes off during a race. Increased weight or load on the inside of the foot will result in increased stretch on the tendons´ tissues on the inside of the lower leg, since the musculature holds back. The tissue of muscles, tendons and the membrane are repeatedly stretched, and will contribute to more irritated structures.
What you can do yourself:
Find out what triggers the pain
Adjust the load of training, and avoid trigging the pain
Prevent pain by using adequate shoes, and avoid too hard ground conditions
Avoid one-sided training
