Disc protrusion
A disc protrusion in your spine could be recognized with numbness, tingling, and loss of strength in the legs, and reduced function in the actual part of your back. The symptoms can be acute or gradual. The symptoms will vary
The spine is built up of many bones, called vertebrae. Between each vertebra is a disc. The discs are made of strong rubberlike material which helps the spine to be flexible. The spinal cord is protected by the spine and contains the nerves that come from the brain. The nerves come out from between the vertebrae to relay messages to and from various parts of the body.
If the discs are exposed too much strain over time, and in some cases, too much overload, it could result in cracking of the hard, outer ring. The soft core is often pressed out through these fractures, and they form protuberances on the spine, called disc protrusions. This protrusion could create problems when other structures like nerves and blood vessels, in the back are compressed or irritated. A compressed nerve will lose its function, and results in symptoms in one leg or both. The symptoms are of loss of muscle function, numbness or tingling.
Those exposed to this disorder often have other family members with the same disposition, or they have congenital changes in their spine. There is also a proven connection between cigarette smoking and increased occurrence of disc protrusions.
