Thoracic Outlet Syndrome
Thoracic Outlet Syndrome is the English term for a narrow area between the neck and the shoulder, and between the top rib and the clavicle.
Ordinary symptoms are often vague with general pain, numbness, tingling or sensation of weight in the arm in question. Additionally, pain in the neck and headaches are often present.
The cause of this rather rare syndrome is the neck musculature being unusually tight, so that the corresponding nerves can be irritated or compressed.
The symptoms will often start gradually from repeatedly and stressing activities such as long-lasting work at the computer or mechanical work with arms above head level. Whiplash and sports activities like throwing or swimming could also be triggers.
What you can do yourself:
-
Stretch neck/cervical column carefully
-
Ice bag on the area will ease the pain (10 minutes per hour)
-
Try inflammatory medication
