Sciatic pain
Sciatic nerves come from the vertebras of your lower back. They melt into a larger nerve which goes down the back side of your leg, all the way down.
Sciatic pain is often perceived as a radiating, grumbling or aching pain moving down the backside of your leg. How far it will go depends on each case.
Sciatic pain may have different causes, but the two most common are:
-
Disc protrusion is often the cause of these symptoms. This indicates that the problem comes from the lower back.
-
Another reason could be that piriformis, a small muscle deep down the buttocks, squeezes the sciatic nerve because the muscle is too tight. This disorder is called piriformis syndrome.
-
The piriformis muscle gets tight as result of long-time unfavorable strain from sitting, acute load from high level activity or from compensating for dysfunctional musculature in the back or hip region. The sciatic pain often starts in the buttocks.
-
It is vital to try to find the right cause for the pain. We therefore recommend health personnel to diagnose your pain.
-
What you can do yourself:
-
Try to locate the pain – does it come from the lower back or the buttocks.
-
If from the buttocks: try to stretch the gluteus muscles.
-
It will help to stand up and move around, and avoid sitting down too much.
-
It could also help to be aware of how and when the pain comes, in order to avoid trigging it.
-
-
If from the lower back: Consult health personnel.
-
A disc protrusion could get more serious if you do not consult health personnel as quickly as possible.
-
The longer you have these problems without getting proper treatment, the more time it will take to have any form of improvement. Worst case, you will need surgery, but in most case there are good prognoses from conservative treatment and training.

How we can help:
-
Sciatic pain affects the nervous system directly, and this might also affect you in many ways. Our brain will constantly try to compensate for the symptoms, but this might bring along more pain or more dysfunctions. It is therefore vital to find out how your brain perceives the problem, in addition to treat the pain locally.
