Metatarsalgia
The five bones we have in our metatarsus are called the metatarsal bones. They connect the ankle bones with the toe bones. The word algi is latin for pain. Metatarsalgia therefore refers to pain in the forefoot.
Metatarsalgia comes from straining the forefoot incorrectly. This will lead to irritated muscles, nerves, tendons or joint capsules underneath the foot. The forefoot holds about one third of the body´s weight. With too much weight here, the front arch will have to deal with the constant load alone, and there will be heavy pressure on the middle toe joints.
Cause:
-
Bad footwear. High heels will increase the pressure on the forefoot.
-
Low or flat front arch. If the arch is too low, the pressure underneath the foot will increase. The joint capsules will be exhausted, and could lead to both irritation and pain.
-
A hyperextension of the toes and a high mid arch results in imbalance of the foot´s musculature leading to a walk without the normal load from the toes. Instead, the pressure is extended to the joints between the mid foot and the toes.
Symptoms:
-
Pain or aching underneath the ball of the foot when walking, standing or running. Pain in one or more toes is also quite common. This have to be differentiated with stress fractures.
What you can do yourself:
-
Cool-down with ice will ease the pain.
-
Bend and stretch the connective tissue underneath the foot.
How we can help:
-
Incorrect load of the foot could have several reasons. Therefore, it is vital to have a therapist identify the cause.
